I work with stoneware and porcelain. I build and fire with wood, gas and occasionally electric kilns. I think the clay should speak for itself, so I try not to overwork my pots. I look for and, hope to find balance in the shapes of my work. Many of my pots are only glazed on the interior so that the clay itself and how it reacts to the fire will be clearly seen. Tradition is important. If functional and intended for daily use, the pots, their handles and spouts should enhance and be pleasant to the touch. Glazes, too, should not be overpowering. My work was influenced by Hamada, Leach, and my own teacher Cynthia Bringle. She taught me to make a good pot, one that is not too heavy and is balanced. Lately I have been doing larger wall pieces that could be used as serving platters as well. They are like canvases and I use oxides and stains that really are best at very high temperatures. Cone 12-13. I make dinnerware and large serving bowls, mugs and Elephants. After living in Africa for 25 years I want to represent nature in the surfaces of my work. Sumi-e brushwork over heavy slips and texture is one way I do that.
