In my current work, I weave together historical topographic maps with flora and fauna that inhabit the environments that these maps portray. In a process that pays homage to the map as an art form, I recreate a map as accurately as possible and insert birds, insects, etc. interacting with the contents of that map. A river becomes a perch for a swallow, a spider hangs his web off of a road, a trout swims out of the confluence of 2 creeks. To create my work, I use a series of layers: a base of water color washes followed by water color pencil, colored pencil, and finally, pen and ink.
